SULFUR Game Guide

Quick Answer

Choose Gemini Oil + Add Damage Oil for extra projectiles, or Plop Back Oil + Saviour Oil for reduced ammunition consumption. Use Bouncing Oils for close-range room clearing, and increased Bullet Size for larger pools and explosions. Your best combination depends on your weapon and which penalties you can accept.

Which SULFUR oil combos should you choose?

Choose between these two combinations according to whether you want more projectiles or lower ammunition consumption.

Oil comboCombined effects and trade-off
Gemini Oil + Add Damage OilDamage -15, Projectile Amount +100%, Spread +0.7. You gain projectiles while retaining damage and spread penalties.
Plop Back Oil + Saviour OilAmmo consume chance -50%, Recoil +125%, Loot Chance -100%. You conserve ammunition while accepting recoil and loot penalties.

Gemini Oil alone gives Damage -30, Projectile Amount +100%, and Spread +0.7. Add Damage Oil contributes Damage +15. It softens Gemini Oil's damage penalty without removing it. You still need to accept the wider spread.

Plop Back Oil contributes Ammo consume chance -20% and Recoil +125%. Saviour Oil contributes Ammo consume chance -30% and Loot Chance -100%. Together, they prioritize ammunition conservation over recoil control and loot chance.

Neither combination is a universal winner. Pick the benefit your weapon needs, then check whether its remaining penalties undermine your intended use.

Which oil effects fit your weapon style?

Match your oil effects to your weapon's range, projectile count, and Scroll effects.

Every oil trades something: Anabolic Oil adds velocity but cuts max durability.

Your weapon or goalOil effects to favor or reconsider
Close-range room clearingBouncing Oils suit high pellet counts or high fire rates, especially alongside status or environmental Scroll effects.
Pools and explosionsIncreased Bullet Size makes these Area of Effect effects proportionally larger. Smaller bullets reduce their size.
Long-range snipingBouncing Oils offer little benefit. Bullet Drop and Disabled Aiming can severely undermine your weapon.
Short-range shots with Bullet DropPenetration, Bouncing, or both can let arcing shots skip toward or through groups of enemies.
Single-loading or one-shot-per-reload weaponsAdditional-ammunition oils do not increase reload frequency, but they take extra ammunition from your reserves.
Weapons already consuming multiple rounds per shotAdditional-ammunition oils add only one extra round per shot in exchange for their benefit.

Bullet Size changes more than the projectile itself when you use pools or explosions. Choose it for those effects when you want larger areas covered.

For Bouncing and Penetration together, expect penetration first. Shots penetrate eligible surfaces, including enemies and breakable objects, until they reach their penetration limit. They bounce from hard surfaces, including level geometry and unbreakable objects. Other surfaces trigger bouncing only after the penetration limit is reached.

How do you combine oils without wasting their benefits?

Build around penalties you can already tolerate, then avoid stacking benefits beyond their useful limits.

Choose the penalty you can accept

Once an oil disables aiming, another oil with that penalty does not disable it further. You can stack those oils when you already accept losing aiming. Consider this approach for short-range weapons; Disabled Aiming can make longer-range weapons ineffective.

Account for recoil and fire rate together

Higher RPM makes recoil accumulate faster on automatic weapons. A lower fire rate gives your weapon more time to recover between shots. A recoil increase can therefore matter less when you also reduce RPM sufficiently.

Use Scroll effects to bypass bullet speed penalties

Railgun effects replace projectiles with an instantly arriving laser beam or lightning bolt, ignoring bullet speed. Holy Fire, Thunderbolt, and Toxic Lobotomy provide this effect. Consider them when your oil combination carries a bullet speed penalty.

Stop at useful chance limits

Critical hit chance above 100% provides no further benefit. Chance to not consume ammunition also gains nothing above 100%. Spend your remaining choices on effects that still improve your weapon.

Do not assume ammunition-saving effects always cancel additional-ammunition costs. Normally, no-ammunition effects take priority when both effects trigger. Single-loading and one-shot-per-reload weapons are an exception: extra ammunition still comes from reserves, even when ammunition saving triggers.
